A house with history
The estate got its name from its owners around 1550, Stefan and Martin Umhaus, and retained it for centuries. Due to the location of the house right next to the church, it can be assumed that the property existed long before 1500. The Umhauslehen, later known as ‚Wirth,‘ was in the hands of one family from around 1563 until 1907.

Under the innkeepers Franz and Dorothea Mader, the inn received its present exterior between 1730 and 1740, and a little later, the interior was adorned with murals, which were restored under Karl Lair in 1992/93. The property fell victim to fire twice: in July 1703 during the Bavarian festivities and on New Year‘s Day 1839 due to an intentionally set fire. From around 1775, the inn became known as ‚der Tiefenthaler,‘ with an excellent reputa-tion that spread to the highest circles. Members of the imperial family frequently visited, and even a Bavarian princely couple honored it.
In 1917, Jakob Lair bought the land and inn, naming the inn ‚Altwirt‘ thereafter. He han-ded over his property in 1941 to the eldest son Josef in very difficult times. After the war, the inn was immediately seized by the Americans and later the French, who were not particularly gentle with the premises. Josef and his wife Maria began renovating the inn immediately after the occupiers left; in 1986, they handed over a well-established business to their son Karl, who successfully ran it with his wife Annalies until 2011.
Today, Altwirt is widely known and popular as a traditional inn and accommodation faci-lity. The business is now in the hands of the fourth generation, led by the son of Karl and Annalies Lair, Martin Lair.
